Geographic Area Covered and Level of Analysis
This sample was taken from four health centers in the Chicago area. These are listed as Cook County Hospital (now John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital), Chicago Womens Health Center, Erie Family Health Center, and Roseland Public Health Center. These health centers were selected by the authors because of their locations in areas of high domestic murder rates. Data indicating how long each subject has lived in Chicago are included in the data set.

Year(s)
1995-1998

Sample Size, Design, and Methodology
The authors describe their method as a convienence sample. Over 2600 women, at the health centers listed above, were randomly asked a series of three questions to determine whether or not they were possible victims of domestic abuse. Of the 2600 of the screened women 479 screened as abused and agreed to be interviewed more in depth. As part of the sampling design, 208 women who screened as nonabused were randomly chosen and interviewed as well.
The interviews were conducted face-to-face. Follow-up interviews were conducted with a 65% response rate.
